Early Greek philosophers (preSocrates, Aristotle and Plato) considered three main areas of thought: metaphysics, epistemology and ethics. These considerations lie at the heart of both western philosophical tradition, as well as older non-western traditions. Metaphysics – closely related also to the philosophical domain of ontology that is concerned with ‘existence’ or ‘being’ – explores what the world and its components (such as human beings) are made of and seeks understanding of the ultimate substance of reality.

A proposal in 1877 to set up a psychology laboratory at Cambridge had been rejected indignantly by the Senate on the grounds that it would be tantamount to putting the human soul in a pair of scales (Farr, 1983).
