Or Benjamin E. Mays, rather than everyday practitioners of the faith. While much work has been done chronicling the lives of these elite figures and the history of the “black church,”41 works focusing specifically on African American women within this church tradition have emerged only recently. Most of these works have come from theology, literature, and history. 43 What is missing from this literature, however, is an ethnography that examines the ways in which contemporary African American women negotiate their day-to-day spiritual strivings.
While I interviewed numerous women in Halifax County, I narrowed much of my research analysis to the lives of eight women: Juanita Cleveland, Carmen Moore, Yvette Stephens, “Ms. Sylvia” Jones, Vivian Dawkins, Diane Little, Gloria McKnight, and Marie Carter (all pseudonyms). Ms. Cleveland and Ms. Sylvia, both in their sixties, are the oldest participants. Ms. Moore is in her fifties. Diane, Vivian, Gloria, Marie, and Yvette are all in their late forties. Because they were closer to me in age and at least a decade younger than my own mother, I felt comfortable calling them by their first names.
These women, their life stories, and my interaction with them for over a year form the basis of my analysis. Needless to say, their lives, though varied, are intertwined within the social network of Halifax County and the public spheres issues on which I conducted research as part of the North Carolina Public Spheres research group. overview The chapters in Between Sundays explore the spiritual lives of women from one Sabbath to the next. Thus, each chapter bears the name of a day of the week, alluding to the possibilities of what any given woman could be faced with on any given day.
