Cohabitation, and living independently without a partner before moving into a couple relationship, both constitute such new stages. Cohabitation has thus been viewed as just one component of many in the formation of a co-residential union, a process during which individual behaviour is less determined by tradition and institutional arrangements, and is more open to individual choice (Giddens, 1992).
