Our work shows a technique using bait plants (“soil phytopathometry”) that allowed us to diagnose several organisms involved in vine decline diseases. The diagnosis of vine decline of melon is not easy, due to the diversity of possible pathogens involved, and that root systems of collapsed melons generally lack tertiary and feeder roots, where Olpidium must be observed (30), and remaining roots are often rotting, supplying a medium for saprophytic fungi that can hide the presence of causal agents of collapse (21).
